The Top 10 New Mexico Daily Newspapers by Circulation

Even though the Santa Fe New Mexican stakes a claim as being the oldest newspaper in the west, it was a newspaper called La Verdad that was the first-ever New Mexican news publication (founded in 1844, when New Mexico was still a Mexican province).

    Founded in 1880 as the Golden Gate, it soon became the Albuquerque Daily Journal and in 1889 became the Albuquerque Journal-Democrat. This was shortened to Albuquerque Journal in 1925.
  • 2. Santa Fe New Mexican
    Also known as The New Mexican and founded in 1849, it is known as “the west’s oldest newspaper”.
  • 3. Las Cruces Sun-News
    Founded in 1881 as the Rio Grande Republican, the Sun-News got its current name in 1939 after merging with the Las Cruces Sun.
  • 4. Gallup Independent
    Published six days a week, the Independent covers Gallup and the surrounding area of McKinley County.
  • 5. Roswell Daily Record
    Founded in 1891, the Daily Record’s claim to fame is being the first newspaper to report on the well-known Roswell UFO crash. It was founded in 1891.
  • 6. Hobbs News-Sun
    Published Tuesday-Sunday and serving Lea County, the News-Sun was founded in 1937.
  • 7. Farmington Daily Times
    Published by Gannett, the Daily Times serves northwest New Mexico and Navajo Nation and was founded in the late 1800s.

    Published six days a week and founded in 1896 as the Silver City Independent, it was renamed Silver City Daily Press and Independent in 1935.
  • 9. Carlsbad Current-Argus
    The Current-Angus publishes every day except Mondays, and was founded in 1889.
  • 10. Alamogordo Daily News
    Published by Gannett in Alamogordo, the Daily News was founded in 1898 and mostly covers local news and issues.
