Driving Strategic Social Media Optimization Through Competitive Analysis for a Global Biologics CDMO
The Client
A global biologics technology and service provider (CDMO), supporting partners across the drug development and manufacturing lifecycle. As part of strengthening its digital communications strategy, the company wanted a clearer, evidence-based understanding of how its social media presence performed relative to its peers.
The company needed to understand competitor strategies and trends, identify gaps and opportunities in its own approach, and refine its strategy to improve brand visibility and audience engagement. Fullintel delivered a human-curated social media competitive analysis built around an in-depth review of owned media, producing a set of actionable insights to elevate the company's social media impact and positioning.
The Challenge
The company was investing consistently across its owned social channels but lacked a structured, like-for-like view of how that effort compared to competitors. Without a repeatable benchmark, the team could not reliably judge which content formats and themes were working, where peers were outperforming them, or how their posting cadence and visual branding measured up against audience expectations.
The company needed answers to a few core questions:
Posting consistency and strategy
How consistently and strategically does the company post?
Effective formats and themes
Which content formats and themes are most effective?
Competitive outperformance
Where do competitors outperform the company, and why?
Fullintel recommended a focused six-month analysis to answer these questions, evaluating outputs such as sourcing, manual tagging, and profile tracking, then translating them into outcomes through competitive benchmarking, engagement analysis, and strategic recommendations. The six-month window also helped eliminate the influence of short-term fluctuations that could distort the findings.
The Solution
Fullintel reviewed six months of posts across six companies and four social platforms, identifying top-performing and underperforming content and comparing those findings against peers. Analysts standardized all metrics to build a valid, repeatable benchmark, and manually evaluated content across five analytical pillars:
- No structured, like-for-like view vs. competitors
- Couldn't judge which formats and themes worked
- Blind to where peers were outperforming them
- Posting cadence and branding unmeasured
- Valid, repeatable benchmark across peers
- Clear baseline of how communications performed
- Actionable competitor and platform dataset
- Concrete strategic recommendations to act on
Profile analysis An evaluation of bios, visuals, contact details, and follower metrics across the company and its competitors, surfacing gaps in brand consistency, visual appeal, and profile optimization. This pillar assessed platform presence, follower growth trends, engagement metrics, content frequency, and hashtag usage.
Content analysis Manual tagging and categorization of each post by format, theme, and visual branding elements to identify high-performing content types.
Engagement analysis Measurement of likes, comments, shares, and reactions across each post, normalized by follower count. Influencer collaborations were flagged to evaluate their impact on reach and engagement.
Benchmarking metrics A consistent, apples-to-apples comparison of the company against key competitors, incorporating share of voice, audience demographics, and platform-specific trends to highlight competitive positioning.
Competitive insights Identification of content gaps, emerging trends, and high-performing strategies used by competitors that the client had not yet adopted, including previously underleveraged opportunities such as talent branding and executive voice.
The project focused exclusively on owned content from company handles, evaluating platform consistency, profile optimization, and post strategy. Key implementation elements included:
- Human-coded visual analysis, differentiating between standard branded visuals and those incorporating human elements.
- Platform-specific trend comparison, which showed that video performed exceptionally well on Facebook for CSR and community stories, while LinkedIn audiences responded more to professional updates, SME-driven posts, and human-interest content.
- Content frequency analysis, which identified overposting as a potential issue diluting visibility despite strong content quality.
- Regional context, factoring competitor headquarters locations to interpret engagement trends across markets, with high-engagement posts documented as best practices for format, timing, and messaging.
The approach stayed true to the AMEC measurement framework and the Barcelona Principles, including goal setting; measuring outputs, outcomes, and potential impact; and the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods. AVEs were not used.
The Result
Fullintel's competitive social media analysis gave the company a clear, baseline understanding of how its communications had performed, validating existing efforts while highlighting gaps in content formats and audience engagement. The output was a clean, actionable dataset of competitor and platform engagement performance, supported by visual examples and trend data, which fed directly into a set of concrete recommendations:
Content strategy optimization
Reduce overall post frequency and prioritize impactful storytelling formats over volume.
Improved LinkedIn targeting
Adapt successful video snippets and SME content for US site operations on LinkedIn, mirroring formats that performed well for competitors.
Stronger visual branding
Incorporate human-centric imagery, tied to competitor success, to build a stronger emotional connection with audiences.
Audience engagement boost
Introduce hashtags, interactive posts, and direct engagement to convert passive viewers into active participants.
Acting on these recommendations, the company saw increased engagement on newly created service-highlight and post-event summary posts, and used the LinkedIn insights to inform a new US site social video series.
The findings were shared across marketing, corporate communications, and leadership, and are now embedded into quarterly planning cycles. The analysis will form the basis of a biannual competitive social performance review built into the company's strategic communication planning, with future plans to expand sentiment tracking and audience behavior analysis.
The client is now equipped to answer key business questions on an ongoing basis:
What post types and themes generate the most engagement relative to competitors?
How does the company's frequency and format strategy align with audience expectations?
Which competitor tactics can be ethically and effectively emulated?
This framework continues to enhance the company's share of voice, brand affinity, and engagement across its social channels.
