The Reality of a PR Intern: A 4 AM Wake-Up Call

February 27, 2025 Angus Nguyen
Reality of a PR Intern

Why Media Monitoring is a PR Nightmare

4:00 AM – The alarm buzzes. It’s still pitch black outside, and I question all of my life choices that led me to this moment. I groggily reach for my phone and scroll through my emails, knowing full well what awaits me—a tidal wave of alerts, news summaries, and press clippings that I need to comb through before the rest of the world even wakes up.

4:30 AM – Armed with a dangerously large coffee, I open my laptop and begin the never-ending search for relevant media coverage. I have a long list of client keywords to track, each one requiring its own deep dive. Google News, social media, media monitoring tools—each tab feels like another portal into a bottomless pit of information.

5:15 AM – I manually check news aggregators because, despite the fancy monitoring software, no platform is perfect. Some paywalled articles require actual logins to access, so I spend another ten minutes hunting for workarounds. Then there are the obscure regional publications that refuse to show up in search results, forcing me to scan individual news sites like it’s 2008.

5:45 AM – Social media monitoring time. I pull up Twitter (sorry, X), LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok—none of which play nicely with APIs, meaning I need to do manual searches. My eyes blur as I scan through hashtags and brand mentions. A viral complaint about a client’s product? Great. Now I need to flag it to the team for crisis response.

6:30 AM – Time to compile everything into a report. This isn’t just copy-pasting links into a doc—each clip needs to be categorized, summarized, and formatted into digestible takeaways. Sentiment analysis? That’s on me. Key themes? Better highlight those too. Oh, and the slides need to be polished, because if a single bullet point is out of alignment, someone will comment on it.

7:00 AM – Email is flooding in. A client’s PR team wants additional coverage from behind a strict paywall. Another client wants more Twitter insights. Someone else asks, “Hey, did you catch that late-night segment on Bloomberg? We need it in the brief.” I did not. Time to go hunting through streaming platforms, hoping someone posted an unofficial clip.

7:45 AM – The report is finalized and sent to the client. Relief washes over me for all of five minutes until I get an email: “Can we add one more clip? We ran a story last night.”

8:00 AM – I start over. Again.

9:00 AM – The rest of the team logs in, bright-eyed and refreshed. I pretend to be one of them.

Why PR Agencies Struggle With Media Monitoring

Media monitoring is an essential but brutally exhausting part of PR. It requires speed, accuracy, and a ridiculous level of patience. It’s why so many young PR professionals burn out. The work is necessary—clients need their daily reports, and real-time insights keep campaigns on track. But no one wants to do this job for long. The high turnover in these roles isn’t surprising when you consider the early mornings, the stress of tracking down elusive clips, and the constant game of “Did we miss anything?”

There’s a reason media monitoring is one of the first things agencies look to outsource or automate. And yet, even with AI and tracking tools, there’s no escaping the human effort needed to make sense of it all. The cycle continues.

And tomorrow? Another 4 AM wake-up call awaits.
